Abstract
The Zagros forests in western Iran have been extensively degraded by a combination of natural and anthropogenic factors. Among the major causes of forest degradation in recent decades has been the outbreak of various defoliating pests. The oak white defoliator, Leucoma wiltshirei, has contributed substantially to this degradation, highlighting the need for effective monitoring and management strategies. This paper investigates the potential of remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) technologies for monitoring L. wiltshirei. Periodic monitoring based on the integration of field observations with modern geospatial technologies represents an effective approach to addressing pest outbreaks. In addition to field surveys, remote sensing and GIS can play an important role in continuous pest monitoring, delineating affected areas, and identifying critical infestation hotspots. Integrating spatial information collected during field surveys with satellite imagery makes it possible to map and delineate the extent of pest outbreaks and identify critical infestation areas within Zagros forests in affected provinces. Furthermore, spatial modeling of pest occurrence based on various environmental and ecological factors, supported by GIS, can contribute to predicting areas at risk of future pest outbreaks. Continuous monitoring of L. wiltshirei using modern geospatial technologies, increasing forest managers’ awareness of the potential of remote sensing for pest monitoring, strengthening the application of GIS among pest-management specialists, and providing appropriate training in modern monitoring technologies are among the key practical recommendations of this study.
