Abstract
The Zagros oak forests have experienced increasing degradation and dieback in recent decades as a result of extreme climatic events and anthropogenic pressures. The expansion of this phenomenon, together with the need for timely identification of affected areas and planning for appropriate conservation and restoration measures, has become a major management priority for natural resource agencies. Given the vast extent of the Zagros forests and the difficulties associated with accessing many forest areas due to challenging terrain as well as operational and economic constraints, field-based monitoring alone cannot adequately meet management needs. Under such circumstances, satellite imagery provides an effective means of conducting extensive and continuous assessments of forest condition over large areas. An analysis of changes in forest greenness across the Zagros region indicated that the declining trend in vegetation cover began in 2005 and reached its maximum magnitude in 2008. Areas characterized by steep slopes, south-facing aspects, and higher elevations exhibited greater vulnerability to declines in vegetation greenness. Furthermore, the consistency between satellite-derived assessments and field observations demonstrated that remote sensing data can serve as an effective tool for identifying areas experiencing vegetation stress and prioritizing field surveys. Accordingly, natural resource specialists can integrate satellite imagery, vegetation indices, and targeted field observations to identify areas exhibiting declining vegetation cover and prioritize them for conservation and restoration interventions. This integrated approach can increase the speed and spatial coverage of forest monitoring while reducing the costs associated with extensive field surveys, thereby supporting more efficient decision-making and improving the effectiveness of Zagros forest management. Ultimately, the use of satellite imagery and remote sensing-based vegetation indices is recommended for annual and periodic monitoring of changes in forest greenness and for identifying areas experiencing vegetation decline across the Zagros oak forests.
