Abstract

Landslides occur annually in the Karganeh watershed, Lorestan Province, Iran, causing damage to roads, houses, and agricultural lands. This article presents the signs and indicators of landslide occurrence in a simple and practical manner and provides feasible, low-cost measures for preventing landslides and reducing their associated impacts. The main objective is to enable farmers, village administrators, and local managers to identify susceptible and high-risk areas and avoid construction and other potentially hazardous activities in these locations. To date, 95 landslide locations have been identified and documented in the study area, covering approximately 1,483 ha, equivalent to nearly 5% of the total area. One of the major challenges in the region is the lack of an accurate map for identifying and delineating landslide-susceptible areas. Consequently, some construction activities and land-use changes have been undertaken without adequate consideration of the level of landslide susceptibility. In this study, 95 documented landslides were analyzed to identify common spatial patterns and factors associated with their occurrence, and the entire study area was classified into five susceptibility classes, ranging from very low to very high. The results showed that approximately 24% of the watershed, equivalent to nearly 7,000 ha, falls within the high and very-high landslide susceptibility classes. The use of a landslide susceptibility map can contribute to reducing future losses and improving the protection of the lives and property of local residents. For practical application of the findings, village administrators and local authorities can consult the susceptibility map before initiating any construction activities and avoid development in high-susceptibility zones. In high-risk sections of transportation routes, including roads leading to Rig-Sefid, Namaklan, Gorgabeleh, Deh-Sefid-e Bala, and Taleqan villages, site-specific protective and stabilization measures, such as retaining structures and warning signs, can also be considered.

Key words: Landslide susceptibility mapping, land-use change, natural hazard management, protective structures.
