Abstract
Seed germination is one of the most critical stages of plant development and is strongly influenced by various environmental stresses under natural conditions. The present study aimed to identify effective seed-priming treatments for enhancing the germination rate of Q. libani-infested oak acorns through the selection of suitable seed sources and the application of different priming techniques, thereby increasing the likelihood of producing vigorous and healthy seedlings for afforestation and the restoration of degraded forests. The priming treatments included control, stratification, zinc sulfate (5 g L⁻¹), urea (10 g L⁻¹), potassium nitrate (1.5%), gibberellic acid (200 mg L⁻¹), humic acid (750 mg L⁻¹), and hydropriming. The results showed that the humic acid treatment had the greatest positive effect on shoot length compared with the other treatments. Furthermore, humic acid, gibberellic acid, urea, and zinc sulfate significantly increased shoot dry weight relative to the control and the remaining treatments. These treatments also exhibited superior performance in accelerating seed germination compared with the control. Overall, the application of humic substances, either through seed priming or by placement alongside planting rows, effectively enhanced seed germination. Based on the findings of this study, seed priming with low concentrations of humic acid and gibberellic acid is recommended to improve the germination rate of Q. libani oak acorns. In addition, it is recommended that large and heavy acorns be collected from the lower portions of the tree crown and stored in plastic bags to maintain seed moisture and preserve viability before being transported to forest nurseries.
