Abstract
Marly lands have a relatively wide distribution in Iran and are mainly found in the Zagros region, particularly in the central, northwestern, and western parts of the country. Due to their specific geological characteristics and high erodibility, these lands are considered among the areas highly prone to soil erosion and sediment production. One of the effective strategies for reducing erosion and stabilizing the surface of these lands is the establishment of suitable and compatible vegetation cover. Accordingly, the present study was conducted with the aim of identifying and introducing suitable plant species for erosion control and soil conservation in the marly lands of the Zagros. The findings showed that several shrub species, including Astragalus spp., Acantholimon spp., Artemisia spp., Acanthophyllum spp., and Convolvulus spp.; tree and shrub species, including Amygdalus spp., Acer monspessulanum, Ephedra spp., and Daphne mucronata; as well as herbaceous and perennial grass species, including Achillea spp. and Stipa spp., have considerable potential for establishment in these lands and can contribute to reducing erosion, increasing vegetation cover, and improving soil-surface stability. Based on these findings, the use of the introduced species is recommended for erosion control and soil conservation in the marly lands of the Zagros. Furthermore, it is suggested that several sites in different zones of the Zagros be selected as pilot areas for planting and establishing the introduced species, and that the results of these projects, after evaluation, be presented to local land users and regional experts in the form of extension and implementation programs.
