Abstract
Damask rose (Rosa damascena Mill.) is among the most important medicinal plants in Iran, with a substantial proportion of its production marketed as fresh flowers, dried flowers, and rosewater. However, the share of higher-value-added products, including essential oil, absolute, concrete, and other specialized derivatives, remains limited. This study aimed to identify the factors influencing the development of the Damask rose value chain in the Lake Urmia Basin and to propose strategies for strengthening this value chain. The required information was collected through a review of scientific literature, relevant documents, and reliable reports and subsequently evaluated using qualitative content analysis and the SWOT analytical framework. The results indicated that favorable climatic conditions, the relative tolerance of Damask rose to water-resource constraints, policy support, and the potential for developing processing industries constitute major advantages and capacities for the development of this value chain in the region. In contrast, low yield per unit area, limited processing technologies, weaknesses in standardization, branding, and marketing, and the limited share of higher-value-added products were identified as the main barriers to value chain development. Accordingly, the establishment of locally based processing units, strengthening producer organizations, expanding specialized training programs, developing regional branding, enhancing export markets, and utilizing mobile processing units during the harvesting season are proposed as priority strategies. Implementation of these strategies can increase value added, improve rural incomes, and promote sustainable rural employment, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of the Damask rose value chain. Furthermore, incorporating Damask rose as an alternative to water-intensive crops in the regional cropping pattern could help reduce pressure on water resources in the Lake Urmia Basin.
