Abstract
Wild pistachio (Pistacia atlantica Desf.) is one of the valuable tree species of Iran’s Zagros forests, playing an important role in soil conservation, erosion control, biodiversity maintenance, and supporting part of the livelihoods of local communities. However, factors such as excessive livestock grazing, improper harvesting of mastic resin, branch cutting, drought, and limited natural regeneration threaten the sustainability of this species in some habitats. In this study, the status of mastic tree populations was assessed in three habitats representing different levels of degradation, including low-degraded, moderately degraded, and highly degraded habitats, with emphasis on tree density, natural seedling abundance, apparent tree health, evidence of mastic resin harvesting, and selected soil characteristics. The results showed that mastic tree density decreased from 47 trees ha⁻¹ in the low-degraded habitat to 21 trees ha⁻¹ in the highly degraded habitat. Similarly, the abundance of natural seedlings in the highly degraded habitat was 74% lower than that in the low-degraded habitat. The proportion of trees showing branch dieback also increased from 14% in the low-degraded habitat to 42% in the highly degraded habitat. These findings indicate that increasing grazing pressure and unsustainable mastic resin harvesting may be associated with reduced natural regeneration and deterioration of tree health. Accordingly, reducing grazing pressure, protecting natural seedlings, educating local harvesters, promoting sustainable mastic resin harvesting practices, and strengthening local community participation are among the most important measures for conserving and maintaining the sustainability of mastic tree habitats in the Zagros forests.
