Scientific and low-cost recommendations for controlling gully erosion in Iran's arid and semi-arid regions of Zagros

Abstract:
One of the most important types of water erosion is gully erosion. This type of erosion, especially in arid and semi-arid regions, causes extensive damage and land degradation and results in a significant volume of sediments. In our country, especially in the arid and semi-arid regions of Zagros, this type of erosion occurs frequently. The formation of gullies is mainly due to the dissolution of salts in the soil by water, and in some areas they occur as a result of heavy and sudden rainfall and flash floods. Therefore, given the importance of gully erosion, the present study has attempted to familiarize ourselves with this type of erosion and provide practical and low-cost recommendations for its control, so that by adopting these solutions, we can witness a reduction in soil erosion and the resulting sediment production. Gullies can be controlled by biological methods (using vegetation cover), mechanical or structural methods (building a dam), or combined methods (Simultaneous use of vegetation and structures). For this purpose, control measures should be started from the front or head of the gully. It is recommended that in the first stage, biological methods and the use of vegetation cover (preferably native and compatible with the conditions of the region) be considered, and in the next stage, biomechanical measures (combined) and, in case of emergency, structural measures (mechanical operations) should be carried out.
