Abstract
Honey bees, as the principal insect pollinators, play a vital role in maintaining the sustainability of rangeland and forest vegetation and enhancing the productivity of agricultural and horticultural crops. However, seasonal shortages of food resources pose serious challenges to colony populations, thereby disrupting pollination processes and threatening the health and stability of regional plant flora. To address this challenge and provide a practical management strategy, the present study investigated the effects of a chelated mineral supplement on the populations of adult bees and brood in honey bee colonies. In this experiment, different concentrations of the chelated mineral supplement (0.5, 0.75, 1 and 1.25 g/l) administered in sugar syrup were evaluated for their effects on adult bee population and brood rearing. The results demonstrated that supplementation with the chelated mineral significantly improved colony strength. Among the tested treatments, the concentration of 0.75 g/l was identified as the optimal level, producing the greatest beneficial effects. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that beekeepers use the chelated mineral supplement at the optimal concentration during periods when natural food resources are limited. Such supplementation not only enhances colony health and sustainability but also promotes efficient pollination, thereby contributing to the conservation of plant flora, biodiversity, and the sustainable development of agricultural, horticultural, rangeland, and forest ecosystems in the Zagros region.
