Abstract
With the intensification of drought and the decline in forage production in Iran's rangelands, the need to introduce rain-fed and adaptable species is increasingly felt. This study evaluated the ecological requirements, forage production, and phenology of the rangeland species Astragalus ovinus Boiss. in the cold-season rangelands of Boyer-Ahmad County, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province. In the study area, the presence of this species ranged from 1,900 to 2,400 meters above sea level. Astragalus ovinus can grow in both light (sandy) and relatively heavy soils, but it establishes best in soils with a medium (semi-light) texture. In simpler terms, this plant is neither strongly sand-preferring nor does it favor very clayey soils; rather, it prefers balanced, relatively light soil textures. The presence of this species increased with increasing slope up to 30%, beyond which it declined. According to the results, in wet years with approximately 700 to 800 mm of annual rainfall, this species is capable of producing about 260 kg of dry forage per hectare in rangelands. Based on the findings, introducing and promoting the cultivation of Astragalus ovinus as a practical, sustainable, and cost-effective solution can be effective in managing drought crises and enhancing food security in the livestock sector. Furthermore, to prevent the possible extinction of this species, it is essential to observe the principles of grazing management, including controlling grazing intensity and timing, avoiding early grazing, and applying adequate rest periods in rangelands.
