Abstract
Habitat trees, as key elements of the Zagros forest ecosystems, play a fundamental role in maintaining biodiversity, nutrient cycling, local climate regulation, carbon storage, and conserving genetic resources. These trees, often over 150 years old and comprising only 3–5% of forest density, provide habitats for thousands of animal and plant species and can sustain up to 60% of forest biodiversity. Their unique structural features such as natural cavities, peeling bark, broken branches, and complex canopies create favorable living conditions for dependent species. The ecological and economic value of these trees far exceeds their timber worth. Moreover, they provide services including natural pest control, pollination, and regulation of ambient temperature and humidity. However, threats from indiscriminate logging, improper management, and climate change endanger their survival. From an extension perspective, effective conservation of these trees requires a participatory and awareness‑raising approach. In this framework, two key strategies are pursued simultaneously: empowering local communities through the formation of participatory monitoring groups, and public education focused on the non‑timber values of these trees, using local media and practical workshops. Furthermore, strengthening regulations and employing modern technologies such as GIS and drones can elevate the conservation of habitat trees beyond an ecological necessity, transforming it into an economic and ethical investment for forest sustainability and the well‑being of future generations.
