Abstract
The Zagros forests are among the country’s vital natural biomes that play a significant role in the carbon cycle due to their vast extent. Aboveground and belowground biomass, litter, soil, and deadwood constitute the five primary carbon pools in terrestrial biomes, which serve as essential indicators for monitoring forest carbon stocks. Therefore, assessing the role of these carbon pools is crucial to quantifying the ecological value of the Zagros forest biome. In this study, the carbon storage of deadwood (standing and fallen) and its impact on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks were investigated in the Qalajeh forest site, Kermanshah. The results indicated that deadwood, as a distinct carbon pool, holds a significant amount of carbon; furthermore, its presence exerts a positive influence on soil organic carbon levels in the study area. Specifically, soil carbon stocks beneath fallen deadwood ( ) were higher than those in open areas ( ). This demonstrates that deadwood functions not only as a carbon reservoir itself but also acts as an enhancement pool that augments soil carbon sequestration. Based on these findings, it is recommended that at least 40% of deadwood be maintained as standing deadwood within the forest area, while the remainder should be left as fallen wood, distributed appropriately across the forest floor.
